Telemedicine or home visit: which option is right for you?

Telemedicine has changed travel health — but it is not always the right tool. Equally, calling a doctor to your hotel for a minor question wastes time and money. Our triage nurses and coordinators exist to match the right care to the right moment.

When telemedicine is usually best

  • Mild to moderate symptoms you can describe clearly (cough, rash photos, medication questions)
  • Follow-up after a previous TouristDoctor visit
  • Mental reassurance when anxiety makes symptoms feel worse
  • E-prescription renewal when clinically appropriate

What you need for a good video consult

  • Stable Wi‑Fi or mobile data (hotel lobby often works if your room is weak)
  • Good lighting for skin or throat checks
  • Privacy to discuss medical history honestly

When an on-site visit is safer

  • Abdominal pain requiring palpation
  • Dizziness, dehydration or inability to stand safely
  • Paediatric cases where observation matters
  • Suspected infections needing vitals or ear/throat exam
  • Any case where the tele-doctor advises escalation

Our doctors can switch from video to visit mid-case if they identify a need — you are never locked into the first channel.

Timing and logistics

Teleconsults often start within minutes. On-site visits depend on location across Mauritius — Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Port Louis, Blue Bay and beyond. We give realistic ETAs and update you if traffic or weather affects arrival.

Cost and insurance

Both modalities are widely covered by assistance partners. We confirm before proceeding when possible. Self-pay rates are explained upfront when cover does not apply.
